Heading with earth and cross logos and the article title of Liberal Theology

I believe that America is the greatest country (after Israel because God called that His land) in the history of the world (Winston Churchill stated, "It has been said that democracy is the worst form of government except all the others that have been tried"). I also believe that over the last few decades there has been a tremendous erosion of the moral foundation upon which the country was built. In the section on Hollywood and the News Media on this website I point out how those two institution's influence has had an adverse effect on our society. However, I believe that the lack of a Christian influence has had an even worse effect on America. I think one of the reasons for this lack of Christian influence can be laid at the feet of liberal theology.

Liberal theology is a system of beliefs that deny the historical accuracy, supernatural events, infallibility, inerrancy, and final authority of the Bible. It has its origins in the intellectual movement of the 17th and 18th century movement known as "The Enlightenment". It believes that God is a kind being who would not send anyone to hell. It rejects the concept of original sin which states that all human beings are sinful. It does not accept the divinity of Jesus Christ nor any of the supernatural elements that are attached to His birth, life, death, and resurrection.

The main problem with this theology is that it is founded upon the belief that there is no absolute truth. Therefore the idea is one that comes down to whatever is true for you is the truth or as the Book of Judges states constantly, "every one did what is right in their own eyes". This seems to be a very accurate description of the attitudes of a lot of people in this day and age.

Jesus' response to this type of "reasoning" was, "I am the truth". Christians should do what Jesus said was right for them and not what they feel is right for themselves. Liberal theology however leaves the "truth" in the hands of the individual. Therefore today we have churches teaching that behavior the Bible states is sinful justifying it based on their own human reasoning. This leads to confusion and error among the hearers of these teachings.

Many mainline Protestant churches embraced liberal theology in the late 19th and early 20th century. These liberal denominations have declined in attendance over the years while the more conservative, Bible-believing churches have increased in size. People want stability in their life such as you find in a belief in absolute truth. This is not because people are just wishing for an absolute truth belief-system but because they've discovered that a life that is lived according to the truths of the Bible lead to a more peaceful, stable life. If people didn't get drunk as the Bible prohibits, they would harm the people around them to a lot lesser degree. If people didn't have pre-marital sex there would be less abortions, sexually transmitted diseases, and broken relationships as the Bible declares. The examples of how obeying the truths of the Bible leads to a better life for an individual are practically endless.

Instead these liberal churches teach that if you believe in yourself and do good deeds you will be saved. This is contrary to the teachings of the Bible which say that you must believe in Jesus Christ to be saved. They downplay the role of personal conversion in an individual's life and rather stress the belief that if you are sincere in what you do believe then everything will turn out okay. Again, contrary to the Bible in which Jesus states, "You must be born again" (John 3:7).

In response to this liberal theological movement a group of Christians listed a set of fundamental beliefs that delineated Christian orthodoxy from those beliefs that were in error. They are as follows:

  1. The inerrancy of Scripture; i.e. the Holy Bible
  2. The deity and the virgin birth of Jesus Christ; i.e.Jesus was God in the flesh and born sinless
  3. Substitutionary atonement; i.e. Jesus' sacrificial death and shed blood remove our sins
  4. The bodily resurrection of Jesus; Jesus Christ appeared in the flesh after His death
  5. Jesus Christ will come again; i.e. the Second Coming when He will set up His kingdom on earth

It is only when liberal churches reject their past teachings and accepts these fundamental truths about the Bible will they truly start affecting people's lives in an affirmative, stabilizing manner. This country is in need of a spiritual revival that will only occur when humans stop looking to themselves for answers and start looking to the God of the Universe who speaks to us through His word, the Holy Bible. If this revival does not take place then I believe America will go the way of history's previous great countries and empires and collapse from within.
