In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth
- Genesis 1:1

Thus begins the Word of God, The Holy Bible. In one short, all-encompassing verse, the existence of the universe is accounted for. This section will present the two main theories of the origin of our universe according to the bible. The theory of evolution will not be discussed here. There are many web sites that can cover the evolutionary topic more completely than I could ever hope to or want to. At the bottom of this page I will offer a few web sites that will explain the biblical theories of creation.

I believe that the Bible, which has been proven historically and geographically accurate by archaeology, which has been proven accurate in its description of the sinful nature of humankind, which has never been proven inaccurate scientifically, is accurate in area of the origin of the universe.

A person who believes that God created the universe is called a creationist. There are two main types of creationists. One believes that the universe and the elements it contains were created over a long period of time and agrees with the assessment that it is billions of years old. This person is called an old-earth creationist. The other type of person is called a young-earth creationist and believes that the earth and universe are only thousands of years old. The difference between these two beliefs is primarily how one interprets the opening few chapters of the book of Genesis.

As you read through Genesis chapter one you will see that it says that God created the different elements of the universe during a six day period. The young-earth creationist believes that this means that in six 24-hour periods of time the entire universe was created. The old-earth creationist will point out that in Genesis 2:4 it states, "This is the account of the heavens and the earth when they were created, in the day that the LORD God made earth and heaven." From this they conclude that God is implying that He created the universe over a period of time which includes all six days into one day. The one thing both of these persons agree on is that GOD created the universe and that it wasn't an accident.

From my perspective, it doesn't matter which of these two theories of creation you adhere to. But it is vitally important that you believe that God created the universe and that He has a plan for it and for the creatures that he placed in it. If God is not our creator then we are an accident and are accountable to no one. The ramifications of this are overwhelming. My biggest problem with atheism is that an atheist should not believe in rules of any kind. Who is one human being to tell another human being how to behave. In the animal kingdom it is the strongest who survive. Animals have no compunction about killing each over territory or food. If there is no creative authority over human beings then why shouldn't we be like the animals who have no rules?

Different human governments throughout history have made various laws that have dehumanized human beings. The Nazis thought it was okay to murder Jews, Gypsies, the mentally incompetent, children and others who didn't conform to their ideals. In the United States our government dehumanized Native Americans and African Americans and Japanese Americans. At various times Oriental cultures and Islamic cultures have relegated women to second class human beings. The problem is that when human beings make up their own laws then people suffer needlessly and unjustly.

We here in America believe we have the best form of human government ever devised in history. I would agree with that statement. But it's interesting that our founding fathers recognized the fact that our inalienable rights came from "our Creator". If all the human governments had truly submitted to God's laws then there would have been a lot fewer wars between nations and humans. Thankfully, as Romans 2:14-15 says, God put His laws upon human's hearts and consciences. This has allowed the human race not to disintegrate completely into the animal world. Though people can and do act like animals at times there are other humans trying to restrain them because they are allowing our Creator's laws of right and wrong to work in them.

The good news is that we do have a Creator and that He speaks to us through His Word, the Bible. He lets us know that He is in control of the universe that He created. As Colossians 1:16-17 states, "For by [Jesus] all things were created, both in the heavens and on earth, visible and invisible ... all things have been created through Him and for Him. He is before all things, and in Him all things hold together."

One day the Bible says that the heavens and the earth will pass away to make a new heaven and a new earth. 2 Peter 3:10; 13 says, "The day of the Lord will come like a thief in which the heavens will pass away with a roar and the elements will be destroyed with intense heat and the earth and its works will be burned up. But according to His promise we are looking for new heavens and a new earth in which righteousness dwells." Thankfully our Creator who is in control of the universe even now will also be in control of the new universe as we make the transition into it!
