Cleveland Browns 1963 Season

  • Tragedy strikes the Browns before the season begins. In January of 1963 the Browns' sixth round draft pick from Purdue, Tom Bloom, is killed in a car accident. Ernie Davis dies on May 18, 1963 of leukemia. On June 4, 1963 Browns' safety Don Fleming is killed at a construction site in Florida
  • Former Los Angeles Rams Quarterback Frank Ryan becomes the Browns starting QB and throws 25 touchdown passes
  • Jim Brown has his career-best year rushing in 1963 leading the NFL with 1,863 yards gained breaking his previous NFL record of 1,527 yards in 1958. O.J. Simpson would break his record ten years later in 1973 with 2,003 yards gained
  • Jim Brown leads the NFL with 15 touchdowns
  • Gary Collins co-leads the NFL with 13 touchdown receptions (Terry Barr - Detroit Lions)
  • Browns lose to the Green Bay Packers 40-23 in the Playoff Bowl
  • The Philadelphia Gum Company obtains the rights to make football cards of NFL players for the years 1964-67. The Topps Card Company obtains the rights of the AFL players
