Cleveland Browns 1957 Topps Football Cards
(Complete Set)

Cleveland Browns 1956 Season

  • The Browns endure their first losing season since their inaugural 1946 season with 5 wins and 7 losses
  • Quarterbacks Tom O'Connell, Babe Parilli and George Ratterman ineffectively replace Otto Graham
  • Before the preseason begins John Campbell and George Sarles invent a radio receiver to be placed inside a football helmet. They approach Paul Brown with their invention. Brown agrees to utilize the receiver with the understanding that its use by the Browns is to remain a secret. Browns quarterback George Ratterman uses the device in a preseason game against the Detroit Lions. During the game the Lions coaching staff notices that Paul Brown isn't sending in plays by his usual method of shuttling messenger guards. After halftime a Lions coach sees the radio transmitter hidden by a lightpost. Other teams try to replicate the invention without success. After the Browns use it in three games NFL Commisioner Bert Bell outlaws its use. The original radio helmet is in the Hall of Fame in Canton Ohio
  • Hall of Fame receiver Dante Lavelli retires after the 1956 season
  • Ken Konz leads the NFL in Punt Return Average with 14.4 yards per return
  • Horace Gillom leads the NFL with a punting average of 44.7 yards
